Both Stefan and Caroline both trying to save each other. The traveler possessing Tyler’s body was about to hurt Stefan and Caroline jumps in trying to snap his neck. He wolfs out and Caroline gets scared. Stefan jumps in to save Caroline because that’s what he always does - “I promise you, I won’t let anything happen to you”. He dies saving her life. Caroline watched him die right in front of her. She held him in her arms crying and screaming.
